Program Overview: This session will provide school leaders with a practical understanding of their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth). The session explores how the DDA applies to all aspects of the employment and on-going management of staff in schools.
Participants will gain insights into creating inclusive employment practices that meet legal requirements, while also promoting equity and wellbeing. A case study will be used to clarify the boundaries between lawful and unlawful actions.
By the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:
- understand the key provisions of the DDA and related laws and how they apply in schools
- distinguish between direct and indirect discrimination in employment
- understand when differential treatment may be lawful
- identify examples of reasonable workplace adjustments and understand how to assess requests while documenting the decision-making process appropriately
- apply the DDA principles in recruitment, performance management, and return-to-work processes to avoid common pitfalls that lead to discrimination claims.
