Description:

The 2021 Webinar Series leading up to the Conference aims to bring together educators from the Early Years to Year 12, researchers and industry to consider new thinking and possibilities and explore how STEM education can provide students with new opportunities and pathways for a strong and vibrant future.

In this webinar, Dr Caty Morris will showcase the draft content elaborations that ACARA has developed in consultation with Prof Chris Matthews from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance. Participants will be introduced to the design process and conceptual framework that underpin the rich contexts and mathematical thinking/understandings explored through the elaborations that interface the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures cross-curriculum priority and the mathematics curriculum.

Dr Caty Morris is a Curriculum Specialist, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education at ACARA. In 2017, she received a doctorate for her research in responsive mathematics pedagogy with Aboriginal learners. Her work in both mathematics education and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education has been at school, regional, state and national levels in various teaching and leadership positions from remote to inner city settings.

During 2009-2014, Dr Morris managed a Closing the Gap project for the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) to improve mathematics and numeracy learning outcomes of urban and regional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in seven clusters of schools across Australia.

Dr Morris began her career as a primary school teacher in the Adnyamathanha community of Nepabunna in the northern Flinders Ranges teaching from CPC–Year 8 and later principal. Her career include: Coordinator of Aboriginal education in the Western Area of South Australia based at Port Augusta; teacher at Redfern and Darlinghurst Primary Schools and Ultimo TAFE in Sydney; Project Manager positions for both the Aboriginal Education Directorate in NSW and Aboriginal Education in South Australia; a Math Consultant in the Bronx District of New York City; and Primary Years Curriculum Manager in the then DECD SA (now the Department for Education).
