English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) Students in the Mainstream Classroom: Curriculum Accessibility

1st June, 2023 @ 9:00 am

Date/Time:

01/06/2023 - 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Description:

Ensuring accessibility and rigour for EAL/D students in mainstream classrooms requires intentional design and clarity regarding English proficiency. This workshop intends to build the capacity of curriculum leaders, EAL/D and classroom teachers to support the inclusion of EAL/D students within mainstream curriculum.

Practical activities utilising the participant’s own curriculum documents, student materials and the Australian Curriculum will build capacity to monitor English proficiency, design accessible and rigorous curriculum, and transfer new skills into their school contexts.

The functionality and accessibility of v.9 of the Australian Curriculum for the purposes of inclusion will also be considered in the workshop. Participants in varied stages of engagement with v.9 will utilise a range of curriculum materials, ensuring learning is generalisable to existing and future curriculum engagement, including curriculum materials.

Post workshop, participants may elect to choose an area of interest and continue planning their journey of improvement with the presenter.

Audience: curriculum/subject leaders, EAL/D and classroom teachers

Delivery mode: face to face

Presenter: Melissa Symonds, Senior Educational Consultant, AISSA
