Program Overview: This session will outline key attributes of a financially sustainable school and include a short accounting lesson for non-accountants. Designed for School Governors, new Principals and Business Managers, the content presented aligns with the Standards for School Registration in South Australia, namely Standard 1.4 – ensuring the ongoing financial viability of the school and reporting on the school’s financial performance.

Key financial ratios that school leaders and governors should understand to enable them to assess the school’s financial health will be highlighted. The session will include a practical exercise focused on calculating and reviewing key ratios and how to apply these ratios in long term budgets to manage/mitigate financial risk and prevent financial stress and provide actionable outcomes for the school.

Led by John Somerset, Director of Somerset Education, the session will draw on John’s 38 years in chartered accounting and expertise in financial governance for non-government schools. His mission is to empower schools with financial confidence and strategic insights.
