The Power of Cognitive Verbs
3rd March, 2020 @ 10:30 am
Date/Time:
03/03/2020 - 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
Description:
Assisting Students to Become Better Learners
Teaching academic vocabulary explicitly and then applying the vocabulary in the classroom to improve student outcomes has a solid research base. (Bellanca 2012, Marzano 2013, QCAA 2018). Students explicitly taught the skills and processes of cognitive verbs are better equipped to meet syllabus objectives and demonstrate their learning through assessment.
In this focused and practical workshop educators will know, understand and be able to use the most frequently used cognitive verbs in the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards. Educators will develop a cognitive verb progression of their own choosing that can be used for formative assessment with students. The use of cognitive verbs in designing effective questions and assessment tasks will also be explored.
The workshop will be informed by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) Cognitive Verb Toolkit (2018)
