This workshop is designed to provide teachers and educators from ELC to Year 6 with hands-on activities that will allow their students to explore scientific concepts which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have used for millennia. Teacher presenters, in partnership with an Aboriginal Elder, will share how student learning of scientific concepts can be enriched by embedding perspectives from our First Australians.  This professional learning supports the AITSL 1.4 and 2.4 professional standards for teachers and provides guidance in how educators can embed First Nations’ perspectives in exciting and innovative ways into classroom learning that promotes reconciliation.

As part of this workshop, participants will be given an overview of the ACARA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elaborations Foundation – Year 6 with explicit links to the Early Years Learning Framework. Educators will have an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of some of the ways these elaborations can be integrated into rich, scientific learning experiences. This workshop will focus in depth on some of the elaborations and consider how the concepts behind these science activities can be transferred across learning areas. By exploring teaching strategies that sequentially expand a scientific concept from the ELC through to Year 6, educators will be able to consider a range of approaches to better equip them to differentiate learning.

The Science curriculum has over the years increased the number of elaborations that demonstrate the connection between the core science concepts and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. The elaborations are spread over the three interrelated fields of the Science Curriculum: Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills.
