With connected technology now being used in the majority of schools, a range of issues in regard to data governance strategy or policy arise. Clear ownership of data, clear processes for the collection, management and storage of data are required which ensure accountability for data safety and/or protection. In its 2019 report, Digital Platforms Inquiry, the ACCC suggested schools should regularly review policy, practice and systems that relate to the collection, management and use of Personal information. They should also ensure all school staff understand their privacy obligations when handling student data. To assist Board Members to meet their obligations AISSA, in partnership with RTG and BrightBytes, is pleased to offer a 90 minute workshop to school Board Members regarding the governance and adoption of a school’s Digital Privacy, Safety and Security strategy.
This session will delve into recommended best practice approaches that schools should consider from a strategic perspective when considering data governance policy and procedures. Attendees will be invited to share experiences of how they recognise, analyse and capitalise on opportunities.

By attending this 60 minute webinar participants will:
- Reflect on whether governance at their school is keeping pace with the growing diversity of technology.
- Develop a general understanding of privacy legislation and regulations expected of a school board.
- Strengthen their understanding of data privacy and security compliance to meet legal, technical and moral obligations to safeguard student data.
- Learn how to better align compliance and operations with their school’s ICT strategy.
- Explore ways to improve governing body effectiveness to positively influence technology-enabled teaching and learning.
Rowan Freeman is the Head of Learning and Technology Consulting at RTG. An energetic, determined innovator with ten years in secondary and tertiary educational leadership, Rowan is focused on sustainable change in education, effective change management, technology-enabled learning and teaching and analytics strategy to drive practical outcomes. Rowan has a Master of Education, completing case study research exploring factors that motivate secondary teachers to engage in professional learning, using the stages of teacher professional practice as the comparative factor.
