Science: Ancient Knowledge Meets Western Science, Year 3 – Year 6

Educators, teachers and an Aboriginal Elder will share how student engagement and learning of scientific concepts can be enriched by embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.  Science teachers will share how they embedded Aboriginal perspectives into authentic science tasks and discuss the task design, pedagogical approach, resources and student learning.

This workshop is designed to provide teachers with an overview of the new ACARA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elaborations for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. As part of this workshop, teachers will have an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of some of the ways these elaborations can be integrated into the Science curriculum. There are 31 new elaborations for Years 3 to 6 making a total of 36 in the refined Science curriculum. We will focus in depth on a small number so that there are opportunities to consider how the concepts behind these Science activities can be integrated into learning designs.

They are scientifically rigorous, demonstrating how Indigenous history, culture, knowledge and understanding can be incorporated into teaching core scientific concepts”. (ACARA 2018)

The refined Science curriculum now has 108 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elaborations, an increase of 95. These elaborations demonstrate the connection between the core Science concepts and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. The elaborations are spread over the three interrelated fields of the Science curriculum: Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills.
