Learning to understa nd\, use and enjoy language is the critical first step in literacy\, and t he basis for learning to read and write.\n\nSession 1: Understanding how y oung children learn skills to communicate and form language is essential t o supporting their development and future language learning skills\n\nStep hi West\, Speech Pathologist will address key areas in early language deve lopment including:\n\n engaging children with language from birth to deve lop strong literacy skills and to further develop knowledge of early liter acy and language development\n parent/family engagement to develop ways t o effectively support their child’s language development\n recommended resources for children\, educators\, parents and primary carers.\n\nStephi West has significant experience in the education sector specialising in s upporting students with additional needs including autism spectrum disorde rs\, global developmental delay\, syndrome disorders and other intellectua l disabilities. Her approach is based on practical\, everyday integration of core communication skills\, as well as involving the environment and re lationships to build functional language\, vocabulary and interaction. Ste phi has extensive experience in the areas of language development\, behavi our support\, foundational skills of communication\, alternative communica tion strategies and combines the theories of well-known methods (including Intensive interaction\, Floortime\, Zones of Regulation\, SOS Approach to Feeding and Circle of Security) to create an individualised ‘toolbox’ approach.
