SUMMARY:Discovering AI - Creating Curious Classrooms Action Research\, Seme
 ster 2 intake
DESCRIPTION:This professional learning is an opportunity for primary and se
condary Mathematics and/or Digital Technologies teachers (F - Year 10) to
learn about the links in their subject to artificial intelligence (AI). Th
is rapidly expanding\, new field of knowledge is impacting every aspect of
our lives\, often in ways we do not see. This professional learning will
help participants understand some of the almost invisible ways that AI ope
rates in our lives\, the possibilities it creates and the ethical implicat
ions that can lie behind the algorithms\, to enable them to create engagin
g and innovative activities for students.\n\nIt will begin with an introdu
ctory webinar which will investigate the AI concepts in mathematics (data
and probability) and digital technologies (data\, digital systems\, defini
ng problems). The webinar will provide participants with an opportunity to
extend understanding of the principles that underpin AI and explore how s
tudents can use AI in intriguing ways as part of classroom learning. Parti
cipants will then be guided through an action research model to implement
a unit of work in mathematics and/or digital technologies.\n\nAs part of t
he action research cycle\, in small groups\, participants will be mentored
through a series of three virtual one-hour workshops to design\, implemen
t and evaluate a unit of work that embeds AI into student learning.\n\nYou
will have access to a range of professional learning resources that inclu
de:\n\n My Computer Brain Learning platform (interactive AI). This online
platform has many interactive AI experiments\, suitable for primary and s
econdary teachers to learn about AI and draw inspiration for classroom les
sons. Selected lessons are accompanied by lesson plans\, co-developed with
the Digital Technologies Institute and the Digital Technologies Hub.\n V
irtual AI teacher professional development access for participants for sel
f-directed hands-on AI learning\, such as: creating AI Models\, AI and con
ventional programming\, ethics\, bias\, inner workings of AI and AI scenar
ios with links to Mathematics.\n\nThis professional learning will run over
two terms and will be offered virtually in Semester 1 and repeated with a
new group in Semester 2. No prior knowledge of AI is expected\, and it is
hoped participants will come to this professional learning curious about
AI and beginning to wonder about the exciting possibilities for student le
arning.\n\nSchools are invited to apply for this opportunity by completing
an Expression of Interest. \n\nSemester 2 intake – Expression of Intere
st is due by COB 10 June 2022.\n\nTarget audience – Mathematics and Digi
 tal Technologies Teachers\, F - Year 10\n\nDelivery mode – Zoom\n\nPrese
nters – Dr Karsten Schultz\, Digital Technologies Institute\, and Monica
  Williams\, Senior Educational Consultant\, AISSA\nDr Karsten Schultz\n\nK
arsten made a significant contribution (2019-2021) to the Digital Technolo
gy Hub’s development of Artificial Intelligence Resources (lesson plans\
 , curriculum mapping\, video explainers\, and a ten-part webinar series (F
 - Year 10).\n\nKarsten heads up the Digital Technologies Institute in Bris
bane. He holds a PhD in Computer Science and a Bachelor in Electrical Engi
neering\, with a focus on Software Engineering. In 2010\, Karsten created
the Young ICT Explorers Competition and\, in 2014\, whilst working for NIC
TA (now part of CSIRO)\, he founded the Bebras Australia Computational Thi
nking Challenge\, which is part of the International Bebras Challenge.\n\n
Karsten has been working in the Australian ICT and Digital Technologies sp
ace since 1999 in an international Research and Development leadership pos
ition. He has designed a computer processor\, builds artificial neural net
works\, has 18 patents in his name and has a passion for making the invisi
ble visible.\n&nbsp\;\n\nFor registration enquiries please contact Rae Daw
kins.\n\nZoom links will sent closer to the event.
