SUMMARY:Narragunnawali RAPs in Schools: Creating a Better Future for all
 Young People through Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to support schools to create a better
future for all young Australians through working in partnership with
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to learn more about
Australia’s rich histories and cultures. The session will provide
insights and strategies relevant for schools at all stages of their
engagement with a Narragunnawali RAP\, including those schools:\n\n
considering a RAP and wanting to know more before beginning\n in the
process of drafting or implementing their first RAP\n thinking about how
to re-engage with a RAP after losing momentum\n highly engaged schools in
their second or third RAP\n using RAPs as a vehicle for implementing
authentic student agency\n\nA significant number of our member schools have
engaged in Narragunnawali RAPs since the launch in 2015. In many senses
this is trailblazing work with each school community having their own
unique set of opportunities and challenges.\n\nThis workshop is designed to
bring together schools at various stages of their RAP journey to learn from
each other. Schools new to the RAP implementation and schools who want to
reinvigorate their RAP implementation will be able to hear how other
schools have approached this\, what has worked and what might have worked
better. Schools which have been on the reconciliation journey for many
years will be able to share significant turning points in their
stories.\n\nWorkshop Outline \n\nThe workshop will be designed so that
schools are provided with an opportunity to share:\n\n highlights of their
RAP engagement\n challenges of implementing a RAP\n strategies to keep
the momentum going\n hopes for the future.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nTarget audience:

SUMMARY:Science: Ancient knowledge meets western science\, teaching a truer
 Australian science Year 7 – Year 10
DESCRIPTION:Educators\, teachers and an Aboriginal Elder will share how
student engagement and learning of scientific concepts can be enriched by
embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.  Science
teachers will share how they embedded Aboriginal perspectives into
authentic science tasks and discuss the task design\, pedagogical
approach\, resources and student learning.\n\nThis workshop is designed to
provide teachers with an overview of the new ACARA Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander elaborations for Years 7\, 8\, 9 and 10. As part of this
workshop\, teachers will have an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding
of some of the ways these elaborations can be integrated into the Science
curriculum. There are 49 new elaborations for Years 7-10 making a total of
53 in the refined Science curriculum. We will focus in depth on a small
number so that there are opportunities to consider how the concepts behind
these Science activities can be integrated into learning designs.\n“The
elaborations acknowledge that Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander
Peoples have worked scientifically for millennia and continue to contribute
to contemporary science. They are scientifically rigorous\, demonstrating
how Indigenous history\, culture\, knowledge and understanding can be
incorporated into teaching core scientific concepts”. (ACARA 2018)\nThe
refined Science curriculum now has 108 Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander elaborations\, an increase of 95. These elaborations demonstrate
the connection between the core Science concepts and Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander histories and cultures. The elaborations are spread over
the three interrelated fields of the Science curriculum: Science
Understanding\, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry
Skills.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nTarget audience: Directors of Learning\, Science

have experienced comparatively little disruption to their culture since the
arrival of Europeans\, and therefore visitors to this remote part of
Australia will be able to experience the complex and rich cultural life of

of cultural knowledge and wisdom between the Yolngu people and visitors
welcomed to their Country.\n\nAccommodation and Activities\n\nThe program
will begin and end in single room accommodation in Nhulunbuy\, East Arnhem

SUMMARY:The Interface of Mathematics with First Nations' Histories and
 Cultures
DESCRIPTION:Parallel to the revision of the Australian Curriculum\, new
content elaborations have been developed by ACARA in collaboration with the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance. These
elaborations provide examples of how the teaching and learning of the
content of Mathematics can be supported using contexts drawn from the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures
cross-curriculum priority.\n\nEngaging in this project with Aboriginal
partners will provide participating schools with increased knowledge and
understanding about the new Mathematics content elaborations and their
interface with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and
Cultures cross-curriculum priority and the Mathematics curriculum. Through
professional learning\, school-based coaching sessions and action inquiry\,
participating leaders and teachers will engage with the elaborations and
explore their potential for enriching Mathematics teaching and learning
whilst providing a more culturally responsive curriculum experience for
students (and teachers). This project will support the AITSL ‘Building
Indigenous Cultural Competency in the Australian Teaching Workforce’
project.\n\nParticipating schools will be encouraged to engage with local
Aboriginal partners.\n\nRegistrations have now closed for this
 program.\n\nSession in the series:\n\nDay 1: 2 March\, 9.00 am – 3.30

SUMMARY:Science: Ancient Knowledge Meets Western Science ELC -Year 6
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to provide teachers and educators
from ELC to Year 6 with hands-on activities that will allow their students
to explore scientific concepts which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Peoples have used for millennia. Teacher presenters\, in partnership with
an Aboriginal Elder\, will share how student learning of scientific
concepts can be enriched by embedding perspectives from our First
Australians.  This professional learning supports the AITSL 1.4 and 2.4
professional standards for teachers and provides guidance in how educators
can embed First Nations' perspectives in exciting and innovative ways into
classroom learning that promotes reconciliation.\n\nAs part of this
workshop\, participants will be given an overview of the ACARA Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander Elaborations Foundation – Year 6 with explicit
links to the Early Years Learning Framework. Educators will have an
opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of some of the ways these
elaborations can be integrated into rich\, scientific learning experiences.
This workshop will focus in depth on some of the elaborations and consider
how the concepts behind these science activities can be transferred across
learning areas. By exploring teaching strategies that sequentially expand a
scientific concept from the ELC through to Year 6\, educators will be able
to consider a range of approaches to better equip them to differentiate
learning.\n\n“The elaborations acknowledge that Aboriginal Peoples and
Torres Strait Islander Peoples have worked scientifically for millennia and
continue to contribute to contemporary science. They are scientifically
rigorous\, demonstrating how Indigenous history\, culture\, knowledge and
