SUMMARY:Building a Positive Board Culture
DESCRIPTION:It is essential that a school’s Board sets the cultural and
ethical tone for the school. A core part of this happens in the
relationship between the Board and the school leadership\, and the signals
that the Board’s interactions send about what ‘good’ looks like\,
what is expected\, what is celebrated and what is taboo. The relationship
between the Board and Principal and by extension\, the school’s
stakeholders\, has a huge bearing on the ability of a school to adapt and
thrive. There is a growing appreciation that the quality of this
relationship\, given the direct influence of Principal leadership\,
represents an integral ingredient in the formation of school culture.\n\nA
Board’s internal culture has profound implications for the collective
culture and ultimately the adaptive capacity of the school it oversees.
Only through surfacing\, understanding and progressing its own culture can
a Board truly shape the culture of a school. To work on progressing
culture\, a Board needs to have a deep appreciation of the culture
necessary to respond to and navigate the challenges and opportunities it
faces (its aspirational culture) and the ability to identify where it is
currently operating (its current culture).\n\nThis workshop will build on
the session presented by David Runge and Andrew Brown at the 2021 AISSA
Governance Conference and will enable Boards to reflect on their current
culture and to identify their aspirational culture using a range of
approaches\, tools\, and frameworks.\n\nDavid Runge will also be available
for contract by individual school boards to undertake a review of culture
and to plan a pathway to the future.\n\nDavid Runge Co-Founder and Director
