SUMMARY:Building a Positive Board Culture
DESCRIPTION:It is essential that a school’s Board sets the cultural and e
thical tone for the school. A core part of this happens in the relationshi
p between the Board and the school leadership\, and the signals that the B
oard’s interactions send about what ‘good’ looks like\, what is expe
cted\, what is celebrated and what is taboo. The relationship between the
Board and Principal and by extension\, the school’s stakeholders\, has a
huge bearing on the ability of a school to adapt and thrive. There is a g
rowing appreciation that the quality of this relationship\, given the dire
ct influence of Principal leadership\, represents an integral ingredient i
n the formation of school culture.\n\nA Board’s internal culture has pro
found implications for the collective culture and ultimately the adaptive
capacity of the school it oversees. Only through surfacing\, understanding
and progressing its own culture can a Board truly shape the culture of a
school. To work on progressing culture\, a Board needs to have a deep appr
eciation of the culture necessary to respond to and navigate the challenge
s and opportunities it faces (its aspirational culture) and the ability to
identify where it is currently operating (its current culture).\n\nThis w
orkshop will build on the session presented by David Runge and Andrew Brow
n at the 2021 AISSA Governance Conference and will enable Boards to reflec
t on their current culture and to identify their aspirational culture usin
 g a range of approaches\, tools\, and frameworks.\n\nDavid Runge will also
be available for contract by individual school boards to undertake a revi
ew of culture and to plan a pathway to the future.\n\nDavid Runge Co-Found
