Navigating the First Years: Setting up Early Career Teachers for Success, session 4 of 5

7th August, 2020 @ 9:30 am

Date/Time:

Event Categories:

Description:

Successful early career teacher induction occurs within a collaborative school culture, in addition to intentional and contextual processes that support the professional practices, professional identity and well being of the early career teacher.  Regular access to mentoring is a key component of induction, benefitting both the early career teacher and their mentor.

Navigating the First Years will scaffold both the early career teacher and their mentor’s experiences in this rewarding endeavour. Through regular professional learning over the year, each early career teacher will receive ongoing support focused on establishing positive relationships and learning environments, as the foundation for effective learning.  Exploration of their pedagogical toolbox aims to link effective teaching strategies and the architecture of a lesson.

An essential component is the school assigned mentor – who will work alongside their early career teacher as they journey from Graduate to Proficient.  The thoughtful pairing of mentor and early career teacher by schools sets them up for success. Mentors will be supported in this important role through attendance at one professional learning day along with video conferencing opportunities.

‘Induction is most effective where there is a strong culture of collaboration and professional growth and where effective processes are in place for all teachers to give and receive feedback on, and evidence about, performance and be challenged and supported to learn.’ AITSL 2016
