Numeracy

The Numeracy Program is a priority funding area within the Literacy Numeracy and Special Learning Needs Program (LNSLN). It aims to assist schools to improve the learning outcomes of educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in literacy and numeracy and the educational participation and outcomes of students with disabilities. Funding is targeted to students from R – Year 12.

The Numeracy Adviser provides support and advice in the area of numeracy and mathematics from Reception to Year 10. Contact details are:

Understanding Place Value: a Case Study of the Base Ten Game is the result of an Australian Government funded Numeracy Research Project undertaken by teachers in the Independent sector between 2001 – 2003. The project explored the role of a commonly used teaching activity, referred to in this report as the Base Ten Game, and complementary learning activities to develop children’s understanding of the number system

Guidelines for School Entry Assessment of Indigenous Students
A paper has been developed by Jay Marshall and Catharine Dinos to complement the School Entry Assessment Issues papers that are included in the ‘Literacy and Numeracy School Entry Assessment for SA Independent Schools’ folders published by the SA Independent Schools Targeted Programs Authority in 2001. Copies are available from this office.

The Shape of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, is a foundational document that has guided the development of the Australian curriculum for mathematics. Maths300 , developed by Curriculum Corporation provides support for teachers through the provision of quality learning activities, assessment and recording ideas.

Nrich is a site developed by the University of Cambridge. On this website are free mathematics enrichment materials (problems, articles and games) for teachers and learners from ages 5 to 19 years. All the resources are designed to develop subject knowledge, problem-solving and mathematical thinking skills. The website is updated with new material on the first day of every month.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids.is an up to date and visually appealing dictionary, by Jenny Eather, 2009, This site contains definitions, examples and activities explaining over 600 common mathematical terms in simple language.
