Who are English as a Second Language (ESL), Language Background other than English (LBOTE) and English as an additional Language or Dialect (EALD) Students
ESL/LBOTE/EALD students are those who have language backgrounds other than English and who are learning English as their second or additional language at school. They include:
- Students with minimal or no exposure to Standard Australian English, whether born overseas or in Australia to parents with language backgrounds other than English, beginning school.
- Students beginning school in Australia with no previous formal schooling in any country.
- Students beginning school in Australia with severely interrupted education backgrounds.
- Students starting school in Australia with part language schooling equivalent to that of their Standard Australian English speaking peers.
- Students with disrupted education in one or more countries returning to Australia.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders learning English as their second or additional language at school.
The ESL Literacy Adviser manages program areas which support the needs of these identified students through school based grants, professional development, funding for intensive English language programs, assistance with student identification and assessment, advice on the development of school policy statements and practices:
