Senior Years (11-12)

South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)

In 2010 students will undertake Stage 1 of the new SA Certificate of Education. The new Certificate provides a structure for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to learn key skills, values and knowledge through a flexible program of studies that includes accredited subjects and courses undertaken both in and out of school. Students will achieve 200 credits over Stages 1 and 2. Compulsory subjects include the Personal Learning Plan (Stage 1); the Research Project (Stage 2); and English and Mathematics (or equivalent) at Stage 1 to demonstrate proficient levels of literacy and numeracy. Students must achieve a C grade or better in these compulsory subjects. Assessment of the new Certificate will be based on performance standards and reported by A – E levels of achievement.

Compulsory Education Age

The State Government has made important changes to the Education Act 1972 through the passing of the Education (Compulsory Education Age) Amendment Act 2007. The changes will come into effect on 1 January 2009.

This new Act amends the Education Act 1972 by inserting a ‘Compulsory Education Age’ category which will require all 16 year olds to be enrolled and participate in an ‘approved learning program’ until they turn 17 years, or have achieved a qualification, or been granted an exemption.

The AISSA has prepared the Compulsory Education Age Guidelines to assist Principals and other school personnel with the responsibility for providing careers and course counselling advice to students (and parents/guardians). These Guidelines provide information to support Independent schools in the implementation of new requirements under the Education Act 1972 resulting from the Education (Compulsory Education Age) Amendment Act 2007.

Secondary Curriculum Reference Group

The Secondary Curriculum Reference Group (SCRG) focus is curriculum issues covering Years 7 to 13.

The terms of reference of this group are to

  • debate secondary curriculum issues
  • monitor the SACE Board of SA and the SACE
  • discuss issues concerning the school/post school transition
  • explore other curriculum issues and initiatives arising from various sources from time to time.

Membership is open to one representative from each school. This may be the Head of the School, Director of Studies, Curriculum Deputies or the most senior staff member who has the main responsibility for curriculum management.

Special interest working parties are formed when necessary.

The group is chaired by a nominee of the Secondary Heads Group.

The AISSA Assistant Director (Educational Services) is the Executive Officer of the group.

Schools that find it difficult to release staff for meetings may choose to nominate "correspondence membership".
