AG Quality Teacher
Australian Government Quality Teacher Program (AGQTP) 2012
The Australian Government, through the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), has committed to working collaboratively with states and territories to implement three new National Partnership agreements to ensure that all Australian school students benefit from a world class education. This includes the Smarter Schools - Improving Teacher Quality National Partnership, the Smarter Schools - Low Socio-economic Status School Communities National Partnership and the Smarter Schools - Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership.
The Improving Teacher Quality National Partnership (TQNP) recognises that teacher quality is the single greatest in-school influence on student engagement and achievement, and that improving teacher quality requires both school leadership from principals and new approaches to teacher recruitment, retention and reward.
Therefore, the reforms aim to sustain and improve teacher quality as a platform for improving student outcomes. Improved student outcomes will contribute to achieving the flow-on benefit of productivity gains from a better educated workforce.
The AGQTP objectives complement these reforms and contribute to achieving the objectives of the National Partnership agreements.
The objectives of the AGQTP are to:
- equip teachers with the skills and knowledge needed for teaching in the 21st Century
- provide national leadership in high priority areas of teacher professional learning need
- improve the professional standing of school teachers and leaders.
